Cristiano Ronaldo has hit back at Wayne Rooney after his former Manchester United teammate suggested the Red Devils should look to sell him this summer.

Derby County boss Rooney was a guest on the Monday Night Football, and he gave a damning verdict on United’s current plight following their 1-1 draw with Leicester City last weekend.

The Red Devils legend stated that his old club are out of the top-race, prior to Arsenal’s defeat at Crystal Palace, and that “there are a few players they need to let go” this summer.

Rooney actually named Ronaldo and Paul Pogba as two of the players who United should axe when the season is done.

Asked if Ronaldo’s return was a success, Rooney told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “You’d have to say no. At the minute.

“I think he’s scored goals, he’s scored important goals in the Champions League early on in the season. He scored the hat-trick against Tottenham.

“But I think if you look to the future of the club you would have to go with younger, hungry players to do the best to lift Manchester United over these next two, three years.

Rooney claims United need younger legs

“And obviously Cristiano is getting on a bit. He certainly isn’t the player he was when he was in his 20s. And that happens, that’s football. He’s a goal threat but I think the rest of the game they need more, they need young, hungry players.

“I think they’ve got good young players. I think Sancho will be better next year, I think Marcus will be better next year.

“They’ve got good young players. I think Jesse Lingard should be playing for them because he brings energy, he brings quality. Scott McTominay has done well, so they have got some good young players.

“They just have to get that confidence, get them believing they are good players and perform at a better level. Then obviously whoever the new manager is he’ll bring his own players in and try to rebuild that group.”

Ronaldo bites back Rooney

Ronaldo’s response to his former Old Trafford teammate came with a blunt Instagram comment.

Rooney had also posted a picture of himself alongside MNF host Dave Jones and fellow pundit Jamie Carragher. However, Ronaldo simply replied: ‘Two jealous’.

Ronaldo could be referencing the fact that while he is still playing at the top level a the age of 37, Rooney, who is a year younger, is struggling in his first stint as a manager at financially hit Derby.

United are back in action Saturday lunchtime when they head to struggling Everton in the Premier League.
