Darwin Nunez compared to ‘young Luis Suarez’ as Liverpool striker told what he needs to refine by Thierry Henry

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez has been warned not to “overdo it” to ensure the goals come more frequently for Liverpool after he scored his fifth goal in seven games for the club.

Liverpool made a huge investment to sign Nunez from Benfica over the summer. The centre-forward was entrusted with replacing Sadio Mane, who left for Bayern Munich. There has been some pressure on the Uruguay international ever since.

It has not helped his case that Erling Haaland has been in incredible form for Manchester City after his own summer move. But the perception of Nunez is slowly starting to become more positive.

He had a difficult start to his Liverpool career, despite scoring on his debut in the Community Shield win over Manchester City.

Receiving a red card on his third competitive appearance for the club prevented him from hitting the ground running. Then, Liverpool’s inconsistent form in the Premier League has led to questions of their decision making.

Nunez has been the topic of some scrutiny, although the evidence is starting to balance more in his favour. Some have noticed his goals-to-minutes ratio has been better than Arsenal’s new arrival Gabriel Jesus, for example.

After coming off the bench to score in stoppage time of Liverpool’s Champions League win over Napoli, Nunez has now got five goals in his last seven games.

However, there are still concerns that Jurgen Klopp needs to start utilising him more to really notice the benefits of what he will bring.

Henry gives Liverpool striker advice

According to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, Nunez needs to feel the confidence of being a regular starter to get out of the trap he has been in of sometimes rushing and overdoing things.

Henry told CBS Sports: “I think he needs confidence, and the confidence that I’m talking about is when you’re at a club and feel like you’re going to play week in and week out, you’re a bit more cold in front of goal because he wants to please so much and do so much and he wants to wow the Liverpool fans.

“Sometimes he rushes it.

“I went through that, when you come in as a big signing and just overdo it at times. Coming in after Sadio Mane, that’s not easy to do and you just overdo it instead of being calm and finishing.”

Darwin Nunez not like Robbie Fowler – but has Luis Suarez similarities

Backing Nunez to become a “handful” for opposition defenders, Henry elaborated on what the 23-year-old needs to sharpen up to reach his peak.

In doing so, the Frenchman referred to ex-Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

Henry said of Nunez: “He’s the type of guy where when he gets one then things will come. I don’t think he’s a finisher like Robbie Fowler, but not a lot of people are finishers like Robbie Fowler.

“But he has goals in him. He’s a bit more of a handful.

“Sometimes he will rush up a bit like Alexis Sanchez or a young Luis Suarez when you felt like things were bounding off of him and stuff like that. But when you start to master what you’re good at, then you can control it better.

“And I think that will happen to him. I think he can do that.”

Darwin Nunez now has seven goals in 15 matches for his new club. In fact, only Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino have scored more for Liverpool so far this season.
