Jamie Carragher, Wayne Rooney have differing opinions on Liverpool’s chances at Man City
Jamie Carragher has voiced doubts about Liverpool’s chances of winning at Manchester City on Sunday, but Wayne Rooney is more positive about the Reds’ hopes.
Liverpool travel to The Etihad on Sunday in what has been labelled a title decider. Firstly though both teams are in action in the Champions League on Tuesday. But they could both meet again in the final of that competition in May.
But all the talk surrounds Sunday’s Premier League showdown, with just a point separating the champions and Jurgen Klopp’s men.
The bookies have City down as the favourites. And former Liverpool centre-back Carragher says Klopp’s men will have to improve if they are to get anything from the game.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “I think both Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk have been fantastic for the last couple of games because during that time Liverpool have just been getting the job done.
“I go back to the 6-0 win over Leeds. And that was a vintage Liverpool display, but it hasn’t been happening for the past couple of games.
“I think they will have to improve their performance level if they want to get the result that they want at Manchester City.”

It’s not totally make or break for either side at the weekend. There are still seven other matches for each side after the fixture.
Liverpool, Man City the ‘best two teams in Europe’
Liverpool have Man Utd, Tottenham and neighbours Everton still to play at home. While City’s fixtures, on paper, look more straight forward with four games at home against Villa, Watford, Brighton and Newcastle.
But Derby boss Rooney, who wants neither of them to win the league, thinks Klopp’s men could prevail at The Etihad.
Rooney told Sky Sports: “The game on Sunday could decide where the title goes because the two teams, I don’t think any of them are going to drop points.
“They both might be the two best teams in Europe at the moment. And I think City’s response to Liverpool winning the early kick-off was massive and that is what champions do. When there is a pressure game, they take that pressure away. And now they have a very testing game coming up on Sunday.”
Asked who he would rather win, he said: “I wish none of them to be honest. I think it could go either way. I think Liverpool are on a great run of form just as Manchester City have. But I think Liverpool can go to Manchester City and win.”
