Manchester United have announced the loan signing of Sergio Reguilon from fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Reguilon will spend the 2023-24 season at Man Utd, which will be his second loan spell away from Spurs after his time with Atletico Madrid last term. As a left-back, he will provide cover for the injured Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

After completing his move, Reguilon told Man Utd’s official website: “In life you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down.

“Having spoken to the manager, I know what he needs from me, and I am ready to play my part in helping the team to achieve success.

“I know that I can contribute to Manchester United this season; I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities.”

The 26-year-old will only have 12 months remaining on his contract with Tottenham – for whom he previously made 67 appearances – once his loan spell ends.

Getting a second chance in the Premier League with a club of Man Utd’s calibre is perhaps not what the Spaniard might have been expecting, but now he has that opportunity.

Ten Hag highlights ‘very good background’ behind Reguilon

Earlier on Friday, Erik ten Hag said: “He is a very experienced player, a player for big clubs, a player that’s played already a lot of games in La Liga, in the Premier League.

“So, he has a very good background, we have seen he can play very intense football, so we are happy.

“While we had a problem with Luke Shaw injured, Ty Malacia injured, they are, for [the] long term, out, so I think we responded very well in that emergency situation.”

Reports have also suggested that Reguilon’s loan could be cancelled in January, depending on the fitness of Shaw and Malacia by then.

For now, Reguilon will work on proving himself to Ten Hag, who has most recently been having to field the right-footed Diogo Dalot at left-back.

Reguilon follows Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund and Altay Bayindir in becoming a new Man Utd player this summer.
