Wayne Rooney names three Mateusz Klich traits he’s excited to see as DC United confirm signing from Leeds
Wayne Rooney is looking forward to benefitting from the ‘vision, range of passing and scoring ability’ of Mateusz Klich after the midfielder joined DC United from Leeds.
Klich became a fan favourite at Elland Road following his transfer from FC Twente in summer 2017. After a loan spell at FC Utrecht, Klich returned to Leeds and helped them gain promotion to the Premier League in the 2019-20 campaign.
The Pole made 35 appearances the following season, as Leeds – then managed by Marcelo Bielsa – finished ninth in the Premier League.
Klich has fallen down the pecking order this term, however. While he has managed 16 outings in all competitions, few of these have lasted a full 90 minutes.
With Leeds unlikely to offer the 32-year-old a new contract, he began looking for a new club to pick up more game time.
And on January 5, he wrote a heartfelt message to Leeds fans, thanking them for their role in his exceptional time at the club. He said his spell in West Yorkshire had been ‘a dream’.
Klich was soon linked with a move to America’s MLS, with DC United. And Rooney’s side have now announced his transfer on a two-year contract, which includes the option of a further 12 months.
Reacting to Klich’s arrival, Rooney told club media: “Mateusz is a first-rate midfielder who will add top-level experience to our roster.
Wayne Rooney reveals admiration for Mateusz Klich
“I’ve been watching him since he helped lead Leeds to promotion to the Premier League and his vision, range of passing, and scoring ability will be a huge asset for us this season.”
DC United’s president of football operations, Dave Kasper, added: “This offseason was important for us to analyze our roster and see where we can make improvements after a disappointing 2022 season.
“Bringing in a top class designated player was atop our priority list and Mateusz has played at the highest levels for both club and country. He will add a ton of experience in the midfield and will be an impact player for us this season and beyond. We’re excited to welcome him to the Nation’s Capital.”
Klich could make his debut for DC United when they play Charlotte on February 1.
Leeds, meanwhile, are reportedly leading the race to snare a Morocco World Cup star as Klich’s replacement.
