Arsenal linked with Paul Pogba as two Prem clubs make move and Thierry Henry wish emerges
Paul Pogba will reportedly be offered the chance to remain in the Premier League, with Arsenal seemingly one of the two English sides making a move for the Manchester United star.
The French midfielder is heading towards the end of his days at Old Trafford. His contract is expiring this summer and talks over a new deal appear to have grounded to a halt. Indeed his personal trainer revealed last week that a move is very almost certain this summer. Now Pogba himself has opened up on his struggles and come clean on his “wasted season” at United.
Pogba’s time at Old Trafford will go down as one of great frustration. As shown with Juventus, before, and with France, Pogba is one of the great midfielders of his generation. Sadly, his form at United has been very much up and down. There have been flashes of that brilliance. But by and large those games, where he strangles the life out of the opposing midfield, are few and far between.
As such, many expect him to recapture his best form overseas, with former club Juventus and PSG also linked.
However, a report emerged on Wednesday suggesting Pogba may yet stay in the Premier League. As per Sky Sports, two Premier League clubs have been in contact with Pogba as his contract runs down.
At first, their identity was something of a mystery. Very few teams could afford the type of wages he would crave. And United’s rivalry with others makes a move seemingly impossible. Then again, this is Pogba we’re talking about. Would anyone be really that surprised if he left Old Trafford and emerged at one of Manchester City or Liverpool?
That said, various reports have indicated that one of the clubs keen to make a move are Arsenal.
Midfielder linked with Arsenal
The Gunners are in the market to strengthen their squad this summer, with the forward line their priority.
However, they will reportedly look to upgrade their midfield department too. And with Granit Xhaka seemingly still a target for Roma, the chance to land Pogba would grant them an upgrade.
Whether Pogba actually opts for the move to Emirates Stadium remains to be seen. While Mikel Arteta’s side will likely offer Pogba the Champions League football he craves, they are not yet seen as a side capable of challenging for the very top trophies.
While Pogba is a title winner in Italy, both the Premier League and Champions League winners’ medals elude him. Whether he would get that chance at Arsenal is debatable.
Nonetheless, it’s emerged that Pogba has revealed he supported Arsenal as a boy.
That was, in the main, due to his admiration for countryman Thierry Henry.
Paul Pogba likely to leave Man Utd
Paul Pogba is looking increasingly likely to leave Manchester United this summer.
He previously told the MUFC Podcast in 2020: “I will be honest. So, at the start, I was an Arsenal fan – obviously because of all the French players, you know.
“Me and my brother were but my other brother was a Manchester United fan. I couldn’t say anything so I used to love Henry and, because of him, I was an Arsenal fan. Then I changed and went on to choose with my other brother. No Arsenal, I went with the other one, the United fan!”
Henry key to Paul Pogba move
Now the Daily Mirror speculates that Henry could yet play an influential role in persuading Pogba to sign for Arsenal this summer.
Henry retains close ties with Arsenal and his influence behind the scenes cannot be understated.
As such, their article suggests Henry can play a leading role in tempting Pogba to the club if their bid is serious.
Arteta’s project at Arsenal is focused, in the main, around bright, promising young talent.
Paul Pogba, at 29, may well break that mould were the transfer to come off in a deal that would be one of the most high-profile free transfers in Premier League history.
