Cristiano Ronaldo walk off: ‘We have to stop talking about Cristiano every day’, pundits discuss latest strop after superb Man Utd win

Cristiano Ronaldo made headline news again as he walked off down the tunnel before full-time of Manchester United’s impressive 2-0 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Fred’s deflected strike and fine Bruno Fernandes effort earned the Red Devils a thoroughly deserved win over a woeful Spurs side in what was arguably United’s best performance under Erik ten Hag.

However, it ended up being overshadowed by Ronaldo walking down the tunnel in the 89th minute after Ten Hag had made all his substitutions and left the Portuguese in his training gear sat on the bench.

Asked by Amazon Prime presenter Gabby Logan whether Ten Hag should have intervened and told him to stay where he was, Thierry Henry said: “It was a magnificent game for Man Utd. The story shouldn’t be Ronaldo walking off.”

However, Henry did not believe it overshadowed United’s win, despite Logan claiming it ended up being the focus at Old Trafford, adding: “No, not for me. Not for me.”

Evra not looking for Ronaldo excuses

Former United defender Patrice Evra was then asked if he would have done the same in Ronaldo’s position, to which he replied: “Everyone is different.

“And I want to say on the United performance, and it’s not to protect Cristiano, but we don’t even know if he said to Ten Hag ‘I’m going in’. Maybe he said to Ten Hag ‘I’m going inside for some treatment or whatever’.

“So I don’t want to find any excuse but I want to be focused more on the performance of United and we have to stop talking every day about Cristiano.”

Alan Shearer, who was commentating on the game, added: “I understand Cristiano Ronaldo’s frustration but look at the bigger picture and the team put in a really good performance. The manager had a big call to make and it turned out to be the right decision.

“It is a difficult situation, we are talking about best player in the word, the best player we have ever seen. It is tough but makes things difficult for the manager.”

United were outstanding throughout a one-sided contest and Henry added: “Whenever there is a debate among us over who was man of the match, that tells you the team played really well.

“I liked the way Fred played, I liked how Casemiro played. He allowed Bruno Fernandes to play higher to dictate the game. That’s why he got man of the match.”
