Tottenham in Sergio Reguilon Premier League switch talks as Lazio loan proposal posed stern challenge

Fulham are in talks alongside Lazio for the loan signing of Tottenham full-back Sergio Reguilon this summer, according to a report.

The Spaniard signed for Spurs in the summer of 2020 from Real Madrid under the orders of Jose Mourinho. Los Blancos have a buy-back clause which expires next Thursday, but they are highly unlikely to use it.

The prospect of Reguilon having a role with Tottenham this term also looks doubtful, though.

The 25-year-old has yet to play for Antonio Conte this campaign following his exclusion from the pre-season tour squad.

Previous reports have detailed how Serie A side Lazio have proposed a loan deal with an option to buy Reguilon.

According to the Daily Mail, though, Fulham have joined the hunt and are also in talks with Spurs.

The prospect of staying in the Premier League may entice Reguilon, who has struggled to consistently prove himself in the English top flight.

Nevertheless, Spurs team-mate Tanguy Ndombele has moved to Serie A on loan too. And his impressive debut there could inspire Reguilon to make the move to Italy, too.

Crucially, Fulham have not yet included an option to buy the left-back just yet. With Ryan Sessegnon and recent arrival Ivan Perisic ahead of Reguilon, his future looks uncertain either way.

Fulham are looking to have a better go at surviving in the Premier League than their 2020/21 efforts. The Cottagers suffered relegation that time but have impressed with five points from their first three games this term.

Adding an experienced left-back in Reguilon for one season could help push them on and provide support in-form striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The Daily Mail adds that Fulham also want to sign Paris Saint-Germain defender Layvin Kurzawa before the transfer deadline.

Reguilon needs Tottenham summer exit

The only thing that is certain for Reguilon is that he needs a move away this summer.

Conte put the writing on the wall for him by not taking him to South Korea in pre-season. Adding Perisic, who won Serie A with Conte at Inter in 2021, made his game time chances harder.

As such, the best solution would be to seek pastures new.

At 25, Reguilon still has plenty of good years ahead of him. At this crossroads in his career, an impressive loan move could ensure he gets back into top form heading into his late 20s.

Sessegnon and Perisic do not look like budging any time soon and it is up to Reguilon to decide his fate.

There is also the business side of things for Spurs. While a loan deal works in the short-term, selling him – potentially through Lazio’s option to buy – would be the best bet if he does not have a long-term future.

And given that Tottenham have signed and loaned out exciting left wing-back Destiny Udogie, the future is bright in that area for Spurs.
