Tottenham transfer confirmed as defender joins Atletico Madrid to replace Nott’m Forest signing

Tottenham have confirmed Sergio Reguilon will spend the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Atletico Madrid.

Reguilon had fallen down Antonio Conte’s pecking order following the arrival of Ivan Perisic on a free transfer. Conte can also rely on Ryan Sessegnon at left wing-back, leaving little room for Reguilon in the squad.

The Spaniard didn’t appear in a single Tottenham squad for their first four Premier League games of the new season as Conte looked to move him on. And the manager has now got his wish, with Reguilon joining Atleti on a temporary basis.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirms the move is only a loan, with no option to buy for Atleti.

Reguilon underwent medical tests on Tuesday morning and after passing these has has been announced by Diego Simeone’s side.

The 25-year-old will replace Renan Lodi at the Wanda Metropolitano. Lodi will get his first taste of the Prem this season after signing for Nottingham Forest on loan.

According to Romano, Reguilon was Atleti’s top target to replace the Brazilian, and they have now got their man.

Reguilon will compete with Reinildo Mandava and Saul Niguez for a starting spot in Madrid. He represents a good option for Simeone as he can play as a traditional left-back, or further forward in a left wing-back role.

Reguilon will be looking to put in some impressive performances while in Spain. This will help to either change Conte’s mind or convince Atleti to make the loan permanent.

The six-cap Spain international should get an interesting welcome when he comes up against Real Madrid in the derby. He came through Real’s academy and made 22 appearances for Los Blancos before leaving for Spurs two years ago.

Reguilon has also had a season on loan at Sevilla, which occurred in 2019-20. They were looking into the possibility of re-signing him, but a switch to Atleti became more pressing once Lodi left Los Rojiblancos.

Meanwhile, Cristian Romero is a permanent Spurs player after signing a five-year contract with the north London outfit.
