Tottenham back to square one as reported player swap for star target goes cold
A potential swap deal that could see Jan Oblak move to Tottenham with Sergio Reguilon heading the other way has been deemed unrealistic.
Oblak has been a reported target of Tottenham’s for a little while. There have been links between the goalkeeper and the north London side since 2021.
Weight was added to them this week, with a report claiming Atletico could allow him to leave.
That would be a massive bonus for Spurs. Hugo Lloris has been a great servant for them since he joined in 2012, having played over 400 games in all competitions.
However, he may soon be heading out the door. Indeed, the Frenchman’s contract runs out at the end of next season.
Antonio Conte’s side will need a top player to replace him between the sticks. It seems they have landed on Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Oblak to be the man to take up the mantle that Lloris will leave.
Reports have claimed that Sergio Reguilon – who recently joined Atletico on loan – may potentially be used as a makeweight in a deal for the stopper.
Should the La Liga side be ok with letting Oblak go, as well as be keen on retaining their loan player, that deal would make sense.
However, Mundo Deportivo have poured cold water on the potential swap. The Spanish outlet claims there is ‘no scenario’ in which Atletico accept Reguilon in place of Oblak.
It remains to be seen whether or not that is the case. However, if so, Spurs will either have to look elsewhere for a new star, or come up with a more attractive deal.
Oblak top signing for Spurs
Oblak would be a massive coup for the north London outfit, if they could pull it off. They have had one of the world’s best ‘keepers in their side for years, and continuing that trend would be ideal for them.
The signing of Oblak would clearly be doing that. Indeed, the Slovenian has kept 177 clean sheets in his 360 games as an Atletico player.
He also has a wealth of experience, both at club level and internationally. What’s more, he has won numerous pieces of silverware in his career, including the La Liga and Europa League titles.
As such, Tottenham would be adding a top player to their ranks, and if there is a chance they can land him, they should be doing their best to do so.
