About Sheffield Wednesday

The second oldest professional football club in England, The Owls as they are nicknamed were founded in 1867 as an off-shoot of the Wednesday Cricket Club. The club's slightly unusual name is derived from the day of the week which the founders of the cricket club used to have off work. They were off on Wednesday and thus it was the day on which they played cricket. The name stuck when the football club came into being. Over the years The Owls have been league champions on four occasions - the last time in the season of 1929/30. They have also won the FA Cup three times, the League Cup once and the Community Shield once.

Sheffield Wednesday play their home games at the famous Hillsborough Stadium, a venue which made headlines for all the wrong reasons back in 1989 when, acting as a neutral venue for an FA Cup semi-final game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, an overcrowding issue led to 97 people being crushed to death. The Owls have been based at Hillsborough since 1899.

The club is currently managed by former West Brom defender Darren Moore. A one-time Jamaican international, Moore has been in charge since March 2021. Other notable managers to have led the club include Arthur Dickinson (who was at the helm for an incredible 919 games), Robert Brown, Eric Taylor, Jack Charlton, Howard Wilkinson and Trevor Francis.

Players to have worn the famous blue and white stripes of the Yorkshire club include Andrew Wilson, Adthe Nuhiu, John Fantham, Rodger Wylde and Mel Sterland. Meanwhile the current squad includes names like skipper Barry Bannan, Josh Windass and Saido Berahino.
